workshops In 2001, the American Associatin of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) ADISC held a series of four workshops covering a wide range of business expertise in the animal field. The goal of these workshops was to develop a conceptual data model which would help define the data needs and the scope of the information system.
Doug Verduzco, the Inteq Group, facilitated the workshops
With each workshop the model was refined and the topics which need further standardization were identified.
Workshop 1. Healthcare management, bio-materials
Workshop 2. Species inventory management, enclosure inventory management, collection management, shipping, regulatory compliance
Workshop 3. Husbandry Activities, Contraception, Training and Enrichment, Behavior, Nutrition, Staffing, Quarantine, Environmental Monitoring
Workshop 4. Research, Population Management, Natural History, Taxonomy Maintenance, Molecular data

summer 2002 workshops Two workshops were held in the summer of 2002 to develop artifacts for the Request for Proposal (RFP). The purpose of the workshops was to gather high-level requirements from subject matter experts on the scope of ZIMS minimally to replace the requirements and functionality that are currently supported in the ARKS and MedARKS systems. Doug Verduzco and James Proctor of the Inteq Group, Inc. facilitated these workshops.
The deliverables for both workshops are a conceptual data model and summary-level use cases. A conceptual data model defines high-level data requirements. A summary-level use case is a structured description of a specific system use such as a registrar entering a new animal. The deliverables from both workshops will form the basis for an RFP.
The RFP will allow us to solicit competitive bids for the development of ZIMS. We are still in the very early analysis phase of the ZIMS project, and once a vendor has been selected, we will be scheduling more workshops to further refine our requirements including system design.
